Excited to announce the release of my new CD "Blue Inventions" July 1st, 2018. It's a set of trios and duets with Tim Harrison on flute and alto flute and Ron Horton on flugelhorn, as well as several solo piano compositions. We'll be celebrating the release July 15th, 8pm, at Mezzrow, 163 West 10th St.

Wednesday, January 17th, the Neal Kirkwood Quartet with special guest Charlie Young on sax, with Essiet Ikon Essiet on bass and Mike Clark on drums. Come to hear us at Jazz at Kitano, a classy gem of a jazz club, 66 Park Ave, New York City. Sets at 8 and 10pm. There is a $17 cover and $20 minimum.

Charlie Young is a brilliant saxophonist out of DC. The quartet will be playing Kirkwood originals and jazz standards, including the rarely heard Billy Strayhorn composition the Ballad of the Very Sad and Very Lonely Lotus Eaters. This is a great chance to hear Charlie Young in a small group setting in a wonderful New York City jazz club.

Studio 312 Thursday Fall series concludes. It’s our last concert, we have to leave the space January 1st. Trio compositions and improvisations with Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Kirk Knuffke, cornet; Neal Kirkwood, piano. This is the ensemble that opened the series two years ago! Studio 312 is an intimate performance venue in the heart of Times Square.

11.16.17 - Studio 312 Final concerts

News from Studio 312

Hi friends,

As they say, all good things come to an end. The Studio 312 era ends January 1st, 2018. We’re being forced out for renovation, not to return.

In the next two months we’ll be presenting our final concerts. It’s been a great run, thank you to all the great musicians who have come through this space, and thank you listeners who have given us inspiration.

Here’s the schedule:

Thursday, November 16th, 8pm. Three Musicians- Tim Harrison, flute and piano; Ron Horton, trumpet and flugelhorn; Neal Kirkwood, piano and vibes. We’ll be performing music for our upcoming recording.

Thursday, December 7th, 8pm. Trio music with Neal Kirkwood, piano; Lindsey Horner, bass; Michael Sarin, drums. This trio returns for a set of original compositions and standards.

Friday, December 15th, 8pm. String Super Trio- Joyce Hammann, violin; Lois Martin, viola; Caroline Stinson, cello. They will be performing Neal Kirkwood’s String Trio and other works for strings and piano. Please note the Friday date.

Thursday, December 28th, 8pm. Final concert! In a fitting bit of symmetry the trio that opened the Studio 312 concert series will be performing the farewell concert. Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Kirk Knuffke, cornet, and Neal Kirkwood, piano and vibes will perform original music and some Monk. Come and hang out after for a farewell party.

The trio will present Kirkwood’s compositions for jazz trio, as well as some compositions of Thelonious Monk as part of his centennial celebration. Vocalist/pianist/composer Natalie Kies and pianist/vibraphonist/composer Neal Kirkwood will present an evening of songs by Kies, Kirkwood, Rodgers and Hart. Natalie lives in Cologne, Germany, this is a rare chance to see her perform in NYC and hear her beautiful songs.

Actor/singer Will Badgett and pianist/composer Neal Kirkwood explore the world of Harlem stride piano from ragtime to Duke Ellington. The stories of pianists Eubie Blake, Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, Willie “the Lion" Smith, James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, and Duke Ellington are told in their own words and music.
