Studio 312 is an intimate performance venue in the heart of Times Square.

11.16.17 - Studio 312 Final concerts

News from Studio 312

Hi friends,

As they say, all good things come to an end. The Studio 312 era ends January 1st, 2018. We’re being forced out for renovation, not to return.

In the next two months we’ll be presenting our final concerts. It’s been a great run, thank you to all the great musicians who have come through this space, and thank you listeners who have given us inspiration.

Here’s the schedule:

Thursday, November 16th, 8pm. Three Musicians- Tim Harrison, flute and piano; Ron Horton, trumpet and flugelhorn; Neal Kirkwood, piano and vibes. We’ll be performing music for our upcoming recording.

Thursday, December 7th, 8pm. Trio music with Neal Kirkwood, piano; Lindsey Horner, bass; Michael Sarin, drums. This trio returns for a set of original compositions and standards.

Friday, December 15th, 8pm. String Super Trio- Joyce Hammann, violin; Lois Martin, viola; Caroline Stinson, cello. They will be performing Neal Kirkwood’s String Trio and other works for strings and piano. Please note the Friday date.

Thursday, December 28th, 8pm. Final concert! In a fitting bit of symmetry the trio that opened the Studio 312 concert series will be performing the farewell concert. Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Kirk Knuffke, cornet, and Neal Kirkwood, piano and vibes will perform original music and some Monk. Come and hang out after for a farewell party.

The trio will present Kirkwood’s compositions for jazz trio, as well as some compositions of Thelonious Monk as part of his centennial celebration. Ralph is an amazing, unclassifiable artist, a true genius!

Classes meet daily Monday through Thursdays, 6-8 pm.
US $300 per person.

Composer Neal Kirkwood will be leading a one week intensive seminar in compositional techniques, strategies and concepts. The course of study is designed to expand and liberate the sonic vision of jazz-oriented composers wishing to go \"beyond tunes.\"

Through analysis of scores by composers from different styles and genres, this seminar will explore compositional techniques and tools. Kirkwood will share his unique perspective, with his experience in jazz, classical and theater composition.

Class size is limited. Each participating composer is encouraged to bring one work-in-progress to develop and share during the sessions.

Monday and Tuesday will focus on harmony and form.
Wednesday and Thursday will look at orchestration and consider aspects of improvisation

The Neal Kirkwood Quartet will be performing Neal Kirkwood’s original compositions at the Third Street Music School, Friday, January 23th at 7 pm. Admission is free.

This concert will feature Neal Kirkwood, piano, with Jimmy Cozier, saxophone, Lieven Venken, drums and Lindsey Horner on bass.
