This "little big band" features some of the top improvisers in New York City and performs Kirkwood's original compositions and arrangements of works by Ellington, Monk, Mingus, Bill Evans, and Kurt Weill.

Experimental yet swinging, The NK Octet performs original compositions and arrangements of jazz standards. The band has been described in Cadence Magazine as "adventurous, elegant and passionate." Kirkwood has been lauded in The Jazz Podium as a "leader, composer and player with an exceptional cast all playing with persuasive joy. He allows all of the musicians in his band their personal freedom of expression."
